Motorists are being urged across the country to immediately pay attention to major road rule changes that might bring with them penalties of up to $961. The disputed rule, being operative from July 15, 2025, will, in general, aim to forbid dangerous driving behaviors that continue to endanger safety on urban and suburban roads. Being a cosnational legislation, local enforcement agencies will start to issue notices with no leniency after a brief warning period.
What the New Rule Covers
The new rule mostly deals with lane misuse, failure to give way, and distracted driving, including mobile phone use behind the wheel. Under the new law, anyone swerving abruptly into bike or bus-only lanes without permission, and those failing to stop at pedestrian crossings and roundabouts, shall be offered an instant fine of up to $961. While this amount may be varied marginally from state to state, a national value is being imposed to signal the seriousness of these offenses.
Authorities have stated that the reason that led to the imposition of these changes was a recent increase in unnatural accidents triggered by carelessness and impatience on the part of drivers. Road safety audits showed that improper lane changes and use of mobile phones rank among the top five factors leading to urban crashes.
Enhanced Surveillance & Enforcement
Under this rule, there shall be more patrols, and mobile enforcement cameras shall be used in high-risk areas especially, like school zones, central business districts, and busy intersections. Transport departments are also working with local councils to update road signage and road markings according to the revised rules.
Traffic officers would have powers to issue fines on the spot, with demerit points applying in most cases, thereby increasing the risk of license suspension for repeat offenders. The fine scheme would include an increased penalty for drivers caught breaking the rule in construction zones or in peak traffic hours.
What Drivers Should Do Now
Before the ruling takes effect, all drivers should take some time to refresh themselves on local road rules, attend a refresher session if possible, and avoid risky behavior- particularly around public transport venues. The awareness campaign will run through July to educate road users about the new laws ahead of enforcement.
