Beginning in 2025, both New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC) are making sweeping changes in car registration aimed at road safety, emissions control, and administrative efficiency.

Digital-First Registration Renewal System
The major shift in registration will effect a digital-first approach in renewals. Paper renewal notices are fast going out of use in both states. Renewal reminders will be sent online, and the completion of registrations will also be undertaken online through the Service NSW or VicRoads portals.
The idea behind this is to cut administrative costs and expedite service delivery. Car owners will have to update their contact details with the government websites to get all important notices.
Road Safety Inspections for Older Cars
From 2025 onwards, in NSW and VIC alike, they will introduce mandatory inspections for all vehicles whose age in the year of renewal crosses ten years. This goes for both private and commercial vehicles.
